Micheál Mac Suibhne

The story of Connemara poet Micheál MacSuibhne (Sweeney) (c. 1760 -1820). In 1846 the historian Hardiman wrote that Sweeney was "a neglected poetical genius who, though held in high repute by his countrymen, was suffered to die in poverty, but this it is said, often occurs in half-civilised communities where pride and ignorance are generally prevalent." Though poverty stricken the people were far from ignorant; Sweeney was revered locally, his work has survived in the oral tradition over 200 years. Together with descendants, poets, singers and scholars, we explore the man, his work and his remarkable times in pre-famine Connemara.
