Assume Nothing: How to Kill a Government in 14 Days

Glenn Patterson finds out how, in 1974, when he was a young teenager, an extraordinary strike slid Northern Ireland into anarchy - and collapsed NI’s very first power-sharing devolved government. Created under the Sunningdale Agreement, its downfall cast a long shadow: there would not be another such power-sharing government for decades. Now, Glenn creates a very personal telling of the rarely-explored, fateful story of the Ulster Workers’ Council strike. Interlacing his writing with never-before-heard sound archive, fresh interviews, dramatised British government files and newly-unearthed written BBC reports, he explores these events anew - and considers their legacy for us today.
