The Essay: Forever Songs – Don’t You think We’re Forever?

Multi-award winning folksinger and storyteller, Karine Polwart, crafts an elegy in song for Al Beck, neighbour and local legend in East Lothian. The songs were the ones played by Karine at a socially distanced, back garden celebration, during the lockdown of June 2020, just weeks before Al's anticipated death from cancer. Choosing the set list sparked an unexpectedly deep and emotional correspondence that she relates over the 5 episodes each concluding with Karine’s rendition of one of Al’s choices. This is an uplifting meditation on the everyday ritual power of music to soothe, honour, remember, and ultimately to die well.
