Clàraidhean Polly Hitchcock

In 1951, American singer and folklorist Polly Hitchcock came to live in South Uist- together with a recording device. A singer in her own right, Hitchcock also brought with her a keen interest in the rich folklore, music, and song in South Uist at the time – publishing a record of these when she returned home. Coinneach Smith explores why Hitchcock came to Uist, speaking to her family in the US about her life, broadcasting Polly’s recorded material from the Smithsonian archives, and hearing from islanders with fond memories of performing for their American visitor all those years ago.
