Mackay's Memoirs
An experimental animated film inspired by Martyn Bennett's composition for pipes, clarsach and orchestra. It is a sensitive yet evocative response to Martyn’s last ever composition which was recorded the morning after his death by the young people of Broughton High School, who never knew that he had passed away, the news being kept back until after the recording.
A visual interpretation of Martyn's wonderful musical composition inspired and influenced by the structure and melody of the soundtrack. The intension is to visually reflect and respond to the way the music had been layered, textured, orchestrated and performed, and the way that the sound evokes the life and landscape of the island people, and it’s rich and diverse wildlife. It is a film that celebrates the links between the traditional music and landscape. That dictates the shape and rhythms of people and places. It aims to bring the people, land and music together as one, and embrace those who feel so much part of it, and whom understand clearly what it is that makes the Island of Mull the glory that was, and is. Mull was a very special place close to Martyn's heart.
